After an assassination attempt on him and his sister, Cathal saved their lives but lost his right hand and his ability to heal with his powers. So instead, he turned to the old books and taught himself the craft of healing with herbs and spices. After the previously-mentioned event, he became agoraphobic and decided to live his life in the castle catacombs.
